Hana’s Wigology Care for Synthetic & Human Hair Wigs

How often should I shampoo my wig?
  •         Lifestyle comes into play, as do body oils and perspiration. As a general rule of thumb, you should shampoo your wig within 4-8 weeks of daily wear.

How do I shampoo my wig?
  •         In a bathroom sink or small tub, pour in a ½ dollar size amount of shampoo and fill with warm to hot water. (Hot water helps to dissolve oils, while cold water will lead to residue buildup, just like washing a dirty frying pan)
  •         After soaking the wig for 15-30 minutes, gently swish a few times then rinse clean with cool-warm water. If you have a human hair wig, take care not to manipulate the hand tied knots, nor should you apply conditioner into the base.
  • Shake the water out of the wig vigorously in the shower or outside, then hang on a stand to air dry. Overnight is ideal for synthetic, but a human hair wig should be styled after washing. The “damp stage” is best to start the human hair styling. Use hot tools on a human hair wig ONLY after completely dried.
  • For synthetic wigs and hairpieces, when dry, brush wig with a wire styling brush to create your desired look. You may also use hot rollers for setting and adding extra body. DO NOT use a blow dryer, curling iron, or flat iron on a synthetic wig. Avoid using the oven while wearing your synthetic wig. The heat will melt the fibers.
  • Aveda shampoos and hairsprays are recommended for both synthetic and human hair wigs. They are water-soluble, non-toxic, and cruelty free. Aveda is also produced with wind energy.
